Drama as Ebonyi gov orders arrest of his aides

Published

on

In what came as a surprise, Dave Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, ordered the arrest of government officials from two warring communities in Ikwo local government area of the state, on Thursday.

Umahi gave the order in Abakaliki, the state capital, during an enlarged security meeting convened on the communal clash between Ekpomaka and Inyimegu communities of the area.

The governor said he had information that those whose arrest he ordered were involved in the crisis affecting the area.

The governor, who was livid with rage, asked Tituts Lamorde, commissioner of police in the state, to arrest Fidelis Okpata, his deputy chief of staff, traditional rulers and government officials present at the meeting.

He also ordered the arrest of those who were not present at the meeting including Frederick Udogu, chairman of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board, and Eso Udogu, ccoordinator of Ikwo South Development Centre.

Umahi directed Cletus Ofoke, commissioner for justice, to obtain a court order to detain them.

“They should remain in detention until they sign an undertaking that no further life would be lost or property destroyed in both communities,” he said.

“I don’t mind losing all the votes from the areas but I will not keep quiet and watch people die unnecessarily and properties destroyed due to irrelevant issues.”

He ordered his aide-de-camp to lock all the doors of the state executive council chamber to prevent the affected persons from leaving the chambers.

Immediately, the police arrested the officials.

Boko Haram threat: Leah Sharibu’s mother weeps, begs FG to save daughter’s life

Published

Rebecca Sharibu has appealed to the federal government to save Leah, her daughter who is still in Boko Haram captivity

The insurgents had threatened to kill Leah in October if their demands are not met.

Leah was among the students kidnapped in February from Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe state.

All the abducted girls were subsequently released, except five who reportedly died in detention, but Leah was held back for “refusing to renounce her faith”.

Leah’s mother broke down in tears at a press conference on Saturday, appealing for the release of her daughter.

“I am here on behalf of my family, particularly me and my husband to plead with the entire world, most especially the federal government, President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, and the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), to please do whatever they can to ensure that Leah is released,” Rebecca said.

“A threat has been sent out that with effect from October 2018, Leah Sharibu would be next in line to be killed. I am pleading with the Federal Government to do whatever they feel should be done to release Leah before the expiration of the ultimatum.

“Monday will be October 1. It is our desire that anybody that can do anything to free Leah should do that. We thank the entire world, most especially Nigerians for standing with the family and for their prayers on our behalf.”

Nathan, Leah’s father, said he does not know if the government and the insurgents have reached an agreement.

“They said the federal government did not respond to their demand; but we didn’t know what it is all about,” he said.

“Since this thing happened, the federal government has not listened to them. So, we don’t know what they mean about that one.”

He pleaded with the government and international community to ensure the release of his daughter.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has blocked two ministers from being governorship candidates in their states.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, and that of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, were disqualified by the screening committee of the APC.

Although no reason was given for the failure to clear Mrs Alhassan, Mr Shittu was disqualified because he failed to participate in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
