Drama in court as wife reveals her 5th husband has 3 secret wives

A 42-year-old businesswoman on Wednesday told Igando Customary Court, Lagos that her fifth husband, Rufus Otegbola, was an unrepentant polygamist.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Funmilayo who was responding to a divorce suit filed by her husband, said her husband had three wives in secret.

She said “My husband deceived me. He did not tell me that he had three wives before marrying me.

“He impregnated me and hurried me into his house without legal marriage.

“I discovered that he already had three wives living with him and there was nothing I could do since I was pregnant, I had to stay.

“My husband beats me all time and even when I was pregnant, he beats hell out of me; I fell into labour immediately, forcing the delivery of the baby.

“As a result of the frequent beating, on May 9, 2016, I packed my belongings from his house and moved to my parent’s house.

“When he lost his job, I was the one feeding him with his wives and their children and I was also paying the school fees of our children and my step children.”

The mother of four, however, consented to the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I am also fed up with the union”.

Rufus had told the court that his wife, Funmilayo, is a serial divorcee as he is the fifth husband of the respondent.

Rufus said “My wife is adulterous and a serial divorcee, she had married and divorced four husbands before I married her.

“Funmilayo is diabolical and fetish, she always comes home with charms and my fear is that she may kill me one day if I do not end the marriage.”

Rufus said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home without his consent.

“My parent-in-law and my wife’s siblings came to my house to pack my wife’s property without my permission,” he said.

He urged the court to end the marriage as he was no longer in love with her.

In his judgment, the President of the court, Mr Akin Akinniyi, noted that the estranged couple were tired of the marriage as all efforts to reconcile them had failed.

“Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The court pronounces the marriage between Mr Rufus Otegbola and Mrs Funmilayo Otegbola dissolved today, both parties henceforth ceased to be husband and wife.

“Both are free to go their separate way without any hindrances and molestation,” it held.

‘One killed, children trapped’ as 3-storey building collapses in Abuja

Activities in Jabi area of Abuja have been put on hold as a four-storey building under construction collapsed at about 2 p.m. Friday.

The building is situated within Jabi/Utako park, directly opposite Panda shopping mall.

Two people are feared dead from the incident.

The incident has caused heavy gridlock with many residents and passersby converging at the spot of the collapse.

According to multiple witnesses, more than 10 people are currently inside the debris while two people have been reported dead.

Witnesses said poor construction contributed to the collapse.

“It sounded like a bomb”, said Chinedu Ike, a witness.

“The workers, including some women selling groundnut are trapped inside.”

Officials from the FRSC, NEMA, civil defence, police and other security agencies are at the building making frantic efforts to rescue the people trapped inside.

The tractors brought were not sufficient and construction companies have been called as reinforcement.

A police officer said two people have been confirmed dead but did not speak on record.

Some rescue victims including the contractor who have various degrees of injuries have been rushed to hospital.

An eyewitness said one of the workers trapped inside the rubble contacted him on phone, but “I could not hear him clearly.”

A worker who narrowly escaped the tragedy said over 50 people work there.

According to the worker, the building has been there for more than eight years.

“There is a sewage inside that piece of land and this contributed to the collapse,” the worker said.

Rain temporarily dispersed the crowd as more tractors enter the scene to save the trapped people.
